  24. Send2Trash -- Send files to trash on all platforms
  25. ==================================================
  26. Send2Trash is a small package that sends files to the Trash (or Recycle Bin) *natively* and on
  27. *all platforms*. On OS X, it uses native ``FSMoveObjectToTrashSync`` Cocoa calls, on Windows, it
  28. uses native (and ugly) ``SHFileOperation`` win32 calls. On other platforms, if `PyGObject`_ and
  29. `GIO`_ are available, it will use this. Otherwise, it will fallback to its own implementation
  30. of the `trash specifications from freedesktop.org`_.
  31. ``ctypes`` is used to access native libraries, so no compilation is necessary.
  32. Send2Trash supports Python 2.7 and up (Python 3 is supported).
  33. Installation
  34. ------------
  35. You can download it with pip::
  36. pip install Send2Trash
  37. or you can download the source from http://github.com/hsoft/send2trash and install it with::
  38. >>> python setup.py install
  39. Usage
  40. -----
  41. >>> from send2trash import send2trash
  42. >>> send2trash('some_file')
  43. On Freedesktop platforms (Linux, BSD, etc.), you may not be able to efficiently
  44. trash some files. In these cases, an exception ``send2trash.TrashPermissionError``
  45. is raised, so that the application can handle this case. This inherits from
  46. ``PermissionError`` (``OSError`` on Python 2). Specifically, this affects
  47. files on a different device to the user's home directory, where the root of the
  48. device does not have a ``.Trash`` directory, and we don't have permission to
  49. create a ``.Trash-$UID`` directory.
  50. For any other problem, ``OSError`` is raised.
